Richmond offers a wide range of culture attractions. One of the finest museums in the Southeast, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) features an extensive permanent collection and attracts major exibits. Other museums include the Science Museum of Virginia, the Children's Museum, the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, the Valentine Museum and the Museum of the Confederacy.
Live musical entertainment is diverse with the Richmond Syphony and the Virginia Opera Association representing just two of many regular productions in the community. The Richmond Ballet, the Concert Ballet of Virginia and live theatre performances at Barksdale Theatre, Agecoft Hall and many other venues allow for varied entertainment.
Thousands of acres of parks and recreational facilities are available for both indoor and outdoor enthusiasts. Comprehensive programs and events for all ages are offered year round. Activities include arts and crafts, dance, music, competitive and leisure sports, games, camping, and special events. Additionally, the region is home to fourteen public and eighteen private golf courses.
The James River provides an excellent opportunity for water sports including swimming, boating, canoeing, water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, and fishing. Over 10,700 acres of park land runs along both sides of the river offering trails for mountain biking and hiking, as well sheer cliff walls ideal for rock climbing.
